PROGRAM: THREE FRONTIERS to CHALLENGE OUR IMAGINATION
The 2018 Engineers Week Committee is pleased to announce our 2018 Banquet Keynote:
BILL STONE, PhD, P.E. - CEO Stone AeroSPACE/PSC, Inc.
Engineer and daredevil explorer Bill Stone is obsessed with discovery. After years of crawling through the deepest unexplored caves on the planet, he's building robots to go where he can't. His company Stone Aerospace built DepthX, an autonomous robot, which descended 1,099 feet down Mexico's deepest watery sinkhole. In 2009, Stone and his team completed a successful mission to Antarctica. ENDURANCE, an expedition sponsored by NASA, was developed to explore and map under the ice of Lake Bonney in Antarctica. But this was just a test for the real mission: building a probe with NASA to bore through miles of ice on Jupiter's moon Europa, then swim through the buried Europan sea in search of alien life.
The reality is that finding living microbes means going to where the liquid water is and searching for energy sources that would support microbial life within that vast unexplored world. Stone Aerospace has, for 15 years, been working the problem of what happens after landing, how to get through 30 kilometers of ice; how to explore for microbial life both within the ice column and in the subsurface oceans; and, most importantly, how to get back to upload what is discovered.
Dr. Stone's talk will discuss the upcoming 2018 international expedition to Sistema Cheve and will then branch into the cutting edge technological world of planetary robotics, and specifically progress that has been made since 2007 in developing systems to search for the first signs of life off Earth. Extraordinary and unusual robotic systems have been developed to penetrate tens of kilometers of cryogenic ice and then deploy an ocean exploring under-ice autonomous vehicle that is designed to detect and classify microbial life. Details of field deployments to glaciers in Alaska and three expeditions comprising a year of work in Antarctica will be presented. The talk will close with a brief discussion of the future of human space exploration and ways by which we could change the current paradigm of space access.
